AI CODING 'Copilot' (Assistant) for Ruby in SketchUp
Просмотров 7743 месяца назад
In this tutorial I cover one specific use case for my OpenAI Explorer @SketchUp extension: A coding 'copilot' (assistant) for Ruby code. When I write SketchUp Ruby code, I frequently need to look up snippets. With the approach presented here, I can use AI to provide such snippets for me instead. This works well with my Roby Code Editor extension where you can then past, edit, and run that code....
AI VISION with OpenAI's gpt-4o in SketchUp
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.3 месяца назад
OpenAI's latest model "gpt-4o" is an "omni" AI model that adds vision capabilities. I have now implemented that functionality into the latest version of my OpenAI Explorer (Experimental) SketchUp extension. This means that you can now chat with the AI and ask questions about the SketchUp model, such as "Are there any improvements for this model?", "Critique this model in the context of contempo...
Easy 2D SPACE PLANNING in SketchUp and LayOut (Full Workflow)
Просмотров 5174 месяца назад
We don't always need to work in 3D. Space layout planning is often easier and faster in 2D, even in @SketchUp's 3D modeling environment. You can easily import a plan (image or CAD file), scale it, and then start laying out perfectly scaled furniture. There are different workflows in SketchUp (Free or Desktop) and in LayOut (SketchUp's drawing preparation software) - I cover both of those in thi...
Printing SCALED VIEWS from SketchUp (Web, Pro & LayOut) - My 2024 Update
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.5 месяцев назад
In this video I describe how you can print scaled, parallel-projection views from SketchUp for Web as well as SketchUp Pro/Desktop (using LayOut). I cover all the relevant aspects and then show how you can use the PDF file format as an intermediate print file format. This video is an update to my older one on this topic (ruclips.net/video/TQOWJ6HwSf8/видео.html). Since that video was posted, Sk...
SketchUp + Thermography: A Powerful 3D BUILDING ANALYSIS Tool!
Просмотров 3295 месяцев назад
Using infrared thermal imaging (thermography) in combination with SketchUp's 3D models allows you to interactively visualize complex building science issues like heat loss, insulation, moisture leaks, and more. As long as you have a thermal imaging camera (e.g. the FLIR ONE which is not too expensive), it is easy to create such a model. In this video I show you how that is done. I actually wrot...
Modeling COMPLEX GEOMETRY with SketchUp's Solid Tools: Cast Steel Connector (Step-by-Step)
Просмотров 5376 месяцев назад
When you need to create complex geometry in SketchUp, it is often better to break an item into positive (solid) parts and negative (void) parts that you can then subtract from each other with SketchUp's Pro's Solid Tools. In this example, I am showing this process for a cast steel structural connector, but the principle applies to many other shapes as well. Some of the tools I used here are: - ...
AI ART: Can SketchUp Diffusion Turn A CUBE into Anything?
Просмотров 5366 месяцев назад
In this video I am having a bit of fun with the new SketchUp Diffusion tool… Give this a try: Add only a single cube to your modeling space and then try to create something from that using only the prompts and the styles in SketchUp Diffusion. This is a great way to explore prompt design. (And admittedly I based this on a competition that the Blender community has been doing for a while.) You c...
Building Realistic Combined Materials with SketchUp (CLT Example) - No Photoshop Needed!
Просмотров 3616 месяцев назад
In this tutorial I illustrate a useful technique for cases where you need to combine several texture images into one material. I am using the example of a cross-laminated timber (CLT) here but you can employ this for many other applications. The beauty of using SketchUp for creating such a texture (instead of Photoshop) is that you can apply textures to correctly-scaled objects (which you first...

Thanks for the video. I have a drawing in mm that will fit on a page of paper. When I send it to layout it is tiny on the page. It is very small on the Layout page. When I set the scale to Full Size 1:1 nothing happens. Suggestions?
Saved me!!!!! Thanks.
thanks you so much, very useful plugin
Hi, I am using the version2024, but when I click the get face properties, it didn't show up anything, is that kind of bug?:(
It works fine for me. Is your face on the ground plane?
0:30 - I'm thinking why not just ent.add_face()? Maybe that will be answered in the second half. ... Yes, you can.
Haha. I choose the mismatched shoeboxes every time.

Hello. I tried this guide, but when i am trying to install, skechup extension manager says error "cant install rbz file"
Make sure that the file structure inside the RBZ file is exactly as needed. It's easy to have everything in a folder and then things won't work.
@@alexschreyer-channel Thank you for the answer. My problem was that it always must be zip archive not rar.
This is the error. | Time elapsed: 1.11s | ERROR: (OpenAI:) The model `gpt-4o` does not exist or you do not have access to it. (SketchUp:) undefined method `[]' for nil:NilClass
Looks like you either ran out of trial funds or you have a ChatGPT Plus subscription, which does not apply for the API. See the following link for more details: alexschreyer.net/projects/openai-explorer-experimental/#a-word-about-cost
I tried installing using sketchup 2021, came up with errors. I had the right API key etc.
See my other reply in this thread.
your videos are awesome, mate.
Great to hear!
tried to use but got this error. | Time elapsed: 2.17s | ERROR: (OpenAI:) The model `gpt-4o` does not exist or you do not have access to it. (SketchUp:) undefined method `[]' for nil:NilClass. I have an paid chatgpt account and the api code entered correctly. i entered CGP-4o
My guess is that you have a ChatGPT Plus subscription. I believe you need a separate API subscription for this. Not sure whether the Plus subscription includes that access.
thank you, cool I will test this new version
I hope you like it.
@@alexschreyer-channel yes I've been using it since the beginning, I like the innovations and the use of chatgpt in sketchup and it's funny I thought yesterday that there would soon be a new version of the plugin with the arrival of chagpt o
Good day Sir. any tutorial on how to protect your ruby file?
I don't have a tutorial but you can just look up the SketchUp folks instructions for that.
Extremely valuable information. Looking forward for more content
Great to hear!
Excellent video good work my friend
Thank you!
The question is....😂 ...is it possible to remove protection from other plugins developed by developers...like removing licensing pop code to bypass it....
Gut! and Nice application example for this kind of texture positioning 👍
Danke!
wtf is shear and camber??
A shear connection is a stud fastener between a beam and a floor slab. And camber is an upward bow on a beam to counteract its deflection.
@@alexschreyer-channel i bet you were intrested in that stuff when you were 14
спасибо вам за этот неоценимый вклад!
thank you - can you also show how to make this a live component or dynamic component so when you scale your component it wont warp the texture?
Yes that happens if you scale the component. Best if you used the push-pull tool inside the component. That way the CLT texture just extends.
Now you just need to go to Mecca
You're right. Someone else had the cube idea first... ;-)
How come you didn't show how to make the foundation?
Can't do it all in these short videos. What in particular are you interested in? Maybe I can cover it in another video.
@@alexschreyer-channel Just a step by step on how and what to choose to make a log cabin like this from scratch. My daughter and I are trying to learn Sketch Up and wanted to learn through a video of building a log cabin. How and which tools to choose. I'm not a novice to software and editing, but am new to Sketch Up.
Thank u
Glad you like it.
Its cool.. but none NONE beat Veras ai youre welcome
Curious to see how these will all evolve in the future.
@@alexschreyer-channel and now I change my mind when I got AIR for sketchup!! Its insane, I cannot wait to make these videos!
Can you show the whole process? I.e. Taking it to the 3D Printer software and printing it in 3D? If you have a 3D Printer?
I actually have that covered in my book's chapter on Making with SketchUp.
I think its a great early stage ideation tool. It has influenced some of my models and given me direction on some rendering choices. Also its fun to use, just like SU. Great video Alex!
You are a bloody god among men

Dear Alex, for the repetition of the lesson, a sign to myself,
the smash tool is great for making elevation views when it comes to designing kitchens and bathrooms and you need to flatten a shower head to use as reference in your plan view
Thanks for sharing how you use this. Great to hear!
I’ve found the terrain to be highly inaccurate and useless mostly when I’ve used it. The one I’ve just most recently tried using, had the site sloping the OPPOSITE way to what it actually is in real life!
Is it possible to keep the "Selection > List Properties" and "Selection > List Attributes" options enabled in Ruby Code Editor without affecting the click operations in the drawing interface? Currently, you must close them first after selecting an object to view. If they can be kept enabled, it will be faster to view the properties of different selected objects.
At this point, my extension can't do that. But I'll keep that request in mind. Also, there are a few attribute inspection extensions that should be able to to what you want.
This is very cool plugin. Thank you for providing this for free.
You're welcome!
Love this plugin!! thanks
Glad you like it!
I have SU2020. Can you make a step-by-step instructional video on downloading, installing, and setting up on SU. Whatever version it will work with, and how to download the version I need Thank You!
This should work with most newer versions. However, I haven't tested with SU 2020. And the installation proces is the same for each: Just download the RBZ and then install from the Extension Manager dialog.
Nice extention but when I try to load it in SU2013 I got too many errors like that - syntax error, unexpected ':', expecting ')' dialog_title: toolname, Maybe I shoud edit as prompted?
You need to get a newer SketchUp version to be able to run this.
it just says i have exceeded my quota but i can still go to chat gpt and ask it for ruby scripts so why doesnt the extention work?
OpanAI implements those two things differently. ChatGPT is free (until they change their mind). But the API that this extension uses is not. Every user gets a few free credits at the beginning but then they need to subscribe with OpenAI.
@@alexschreyer-channel oh ok thank you!
great video
Thanks!
Great work!
Thanks!
Solved my problem nothing more could be asked thank you.

please you can help me to make a script because there are 8 hours that I try to create one and I could not please help me to put two circle the first circle 4 mm and the second circle 1 mm from each line crossing
😮 I can't imagine this happening in my country
This is so much easier with wood houses than with masonry houses.
hi, would you make a Bing AI (which is actually free chatGPT4) extension for sketchup ?
I don't think they offer an API but i may look into Google's at some point.
"a nice extension so that everyone can try this out" - would you make an extension version for who are still using SketchUp 2016 ?
I'll look into it...
Thanks for this interesting topic. May I ask, is there also a way on how to automate layout in Sketchup?
You could try that, too. Layout is also in the ruby api, so some functions are available. You may need to be very specific with the question.
Hi there! First of all, thank you for your contributions with this project. I got this error message, could you please explain what it is? ''Couldn't do it SketchUp error: undefined method Tr for nil:Ni1Class OpenAl error: You exceeded your current quota, please check your plan and billing details.'' Should I upgrade it to ChatGPT Plus to use this extension?
You will need some sort of OpenAI subscription to use the tool. This error basically means that you are out of your free allotment.
I think doing a 3D model based just in orders described by purely words it has to be the lamest thing an architect would do. It takes all the fun away, the creative person enjoy fully what he is doing in real time at a purely plastic manner. Use words to construct in the virtual reality for me is like a failed orgasm.
You have to accept it buddy, Ai is taking the whole thing to another level 😢
